REPORTS

Member of the team, based at Education Development Center, Inc. in Newton, Massachusetts team  compiling the report to Congress and the Department of Transplantation (DOT) on the DOT-sponsored activities and their effectiveness.

The goal of the report is to enable Health Resources and Services Agency (HRSA) to describe the current state-of-the-science of organ donation and recovery and then to assess its own past accomplishments and future likely contributions within that broader context.  Thus, the report is of both general interest to all stakeholders in our nation’s organ procurement system, as well as of specific relevance to Congress and to HRSA/DOT, as they consider the federal role in enhancing organ donation and recovery.  Personal involvement included direct communications with representatives of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Society of Transplantation, the American Liver Foundation, the American Kidney Foundation and numerous hospitals.  The role was to bring to the project thorough clinical familiarity with organ recovery, preservation, transportation and transplantation, the ability to collect information in the peer-reviewed literature, the skills to explore and interpret different patterns of practice related to these aspects of organ transplantation, and direct access to other experts in the field. Also, interviews were contacted with selected number of American and European leaders in the field of transplantation.
